More than giving: Embedding corporate social responsibility into our culture
At aspida, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is about a lot more than writing cheques or making one-off donations. Financial support matters, of course, but the bigger (and longer-lasting) impact comes when our people are involved, bringing their time, energy and ideas to the communities around us. As members of our People and Planet Committee, Carly Howlett and Carrie Tullier have explored how we make CSR part of our day-to-day culture.
CSR is rooted in our culture. Our co-founders Peter Mills and Wayne Bulpitt are both heavily involved in local and national third-sector activity and support and that commitment has helped shape our values - and our belief that everyone has something meaningful to contribute.
For us, CSR isn’t about ticking a box or simply donating funds. It’s about creating a culture where people feel empowered to get involved in opportunities for service that matter most to them. When our team are volunteering their time, sharing ideas or coming together to support causes they care about, the impact is far greater - and far more meaningful.
Our CSR initiatives aren’t decided in isolation - they’re guided by the interests, ideas and passions of our people. From giving time and organising fundraising activities, to supporting sustainability projects and community partnerships, colleagues across the business play an active role in bringing our commitments to life.
On the practical side, everyone at aspida has three paid volunteering days each year to use on a community project, event or voluntary opportunity. It’s a simple thing, but it means volunteering isn’t squeezed in around work - it’s recognised, encouraged and properly supported.

Just as importantly, volunteering gives us a way to influence change, not just support it. That might be skills-based volunteering (sharing professional expertise), taking on trustee and committee roles, mentoring or helping a charity improve how it operates day to day. It’s often the unglamorous stuff that makes the biggest difference - removing blockers, building capability and helping good ideas land and stick.
We encourage participation at all levels of the business. When people have the space to suggest ideas, lead initiatives and get hands-on with causes they care about, you see a real sense of shared responsibility. Whether it’s local volunteering, supporting charity events, contributing professional skills or coming together as a team to raise funds, CSR is something we do - not just something we say.
This people-led approach keeps our CSR work genuine, inclusive and part of day-to-day life at aspida. It also helps build connection across teams and reinforces a culture where collaboration, empathy and social responsibility matter just as much as professional excellence.

For us, CSR isn’t a separate programme - it’s part of who we are and how we work. By building responsibility and community involvement into our culture, we create positive outcomes not only for the causes we support, but also for our people, our clients and the wider communities we’re part of.
